"The Department of Geological Sciences has a vibrant graduate program, with approximately 60 active graduate students, half of whom are pursuing M.S. degrees and the other half are pursuing Ph.D. degrees. Graduate students work with faculty members, other graduate students, and researchers from other institutions, such as NASA, on exciting, challenging, and meaningful research projects. With rare exceptions, all students in our graduate program are supported by Research or Teaching Assistantships.
An M.S. degree is typically completed in 2 to 3 years and involves conducting a Masters thesis research project, in addition to taking classes. Students who receive M.S. degrees are commonly employed by industry or government, teach at community colleges, or use the M.S. degree as preparation for a Ph.D. program at ASU or other top universities.
A Ph.D. degree requires a longer, more sustained effort, typically over 4 to 5 years. The degree involves additional classes, beyond those required for an M.S. degree, as well as a Ph.D. dissertation. A dissertation is an opportunity for a student to conceive, conduct, and complete an independent, in-depth research project with importance to the international scientific community. Students who receive Ph.D. degrees typically pursue teaching or research positions in colleges, universities, and research institutions."
