"The Department of
Geological Sciences
is a medium-sized Department with a complement of
23 staff (lecturers, technicians and secretarial
staff). The Department runs a full teaching and
research programme; currently there are 50-60
postgraduate students. The Department has a long
history dating back to 1876 when Sir Julius von
Haast was appointed its first Professor.
The Department offers the following degrees in
Geology and Engineering Geology:
B.Sc., B.Sc. Honours, M.Sc. Honours and Ph.D. in
geology, and the department is unique in New
Zealand in offering degrees in Engineering Geology
(B.Sc. Honours, M.Sc. Honours and Ph.D.).
In addition, a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in
Science (Geology) and a Postgraduate Diploma in
Engineering Geology are offered."
