"The Geology Department at CSU Sacramento was recently approved
to offer a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in
Geology.
Courses offered in the M.S. program will emphasize practical,
hands-on application of geologic theory to real world
problems. Course offerings will focus on hydrogeology,
engineering geology, surficial processes, volcanology, and geologic
hazards to take advantage of existing faculty expertise.
As the capital city of California, Sacramento has a large
population of geologists who work for government agencies and
private consulting companies. Working professionals will
benefit from the M.S. program because courses will be offered in
evening, early morning and weekend time slots.
A driving force for the proposed graduate program is our shared
facility and collaborative research opportunities with the
Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
In 1996 the Geology Department formed a partnership
with the USGS that resulted in construction of a five story
teaching and research facility named Placer Hall. This was the
first time that a district office of the USGS relocated on a
university campus. In-house experts from the USGS will teach
short courses, seminars, lecture courses, and advise thesis
projects in the M.S. program; other USGS personnel will
participate in guest lectures, field demonstrations, and
provide technical assistance to research projects. Employment
opportunities and graduate assistanships are available
for students who have the desire and expertise to work with USGS
scientists.
