University of Puerto Rico, Program in Volcanology:
|
"The program in volcanology at the University of Puerto Rico,
Mayagüez is informal and small, resulting in abundant student-faculty
interaction, but limiting the number of topics which may be addressed. Our
effort remains focused on a few topics, such as volcanic stratigraphy,
petrology, isotope geochemistry, surface deformation, remote sensing, and
gas geochemistry. Real-time monitoring and risk assessment also are
emphasized. Research benefits from the NASA-funded Tropical Center of
Earth and Space Sciences (TCESS), a multidisciplinary program that
involves scientists from the Departments of Geology, Marine Sciences,
Electrical Engineering and Physics. The cornerstone of TCESS is
the Space Information Laboratory, which houses an HRPT antenna for
high resolution AVHRR data acquisition and an X-band receiving
station whose ground mass extends over most of the circum-Caribbean.
The X-band receiving station is an official downlink for RADARSAT.
The facility currently is being upgraded to include ERS1/2 and Landsat 7 capability.
Funding levels within the Department of Geology to support
volcanology-related research generally are high."
