SUNY-Buffalo, Department of Geology Graduate Program: "The Geology Department offers five degree programs: Masters of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), Sloan Professional Master's Degree (M.A./M.S.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees in Geology, as well as a B.A./M.A. program that provides a composite undergraduate and graduate degree in five years. The MS degree is intended for students who anticipate a professional career in the geosciences or further graduate educations, while the MA degree is a non-professional track for those students who intend to pursue related careers (e.g. education, government, law, geoinformatics).

Students entering the graduate programs are expected to have a solid background in geology, mathematics, and physics. Students coming from other science and engineering backgrounds are welcome, but may be expected to take extra coursework to prepare for their academic and research program.

The main research thrusts within the Department of Geology are Environmental Geology, Stratigraphy and Paleontology, and Volcanology. Students are encouraged to investigate ongoing research activities within the department and contact the faculty involved in their areas of interest, before completing their application to the program.

Financial support for qualified students is available through research assistantships (RAs) and teaching assistantships (TAs). Both assistantships include a full tuition waiver plus a salary. All applicants to the graduate program are considered automatically for TA's. To obtain an RA, the student is encouraged to identify faculty in their research area and contact them directly concerning research opportunities. Partial RA support is also available in some cases."
