Geology Department: The Geology Department at UH Hilo provides a complete program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. A variety of courses is offered allowing students to focus their studies within specialties of particular interest. The major provides a strong background for students interested in pursuing graduate study. The Geology major or minor can also be used to prepare students for careers in science education. By completing additional course work in education, students may receive state teaching certification. The Geology program also supports a minor in earth and space science. Close ties exist between UH Hilo and UH Manoa (in Honolulu), making it possible for students to continue their graduate education in Geology within the University of Hawaii system if desired.

The Geology Building, completed in 1989, contains new equipment and laboratories representing an investment of over $1.3 million by the State of Hawaii. The component laboratories, classrooms and support facilities have been designed to house a complete and state-of-the-art geology program. Complete laboratory facilities include those for rock preparation, mineralogy and petrology, wet chemistry, seismic monitoring and computer applications and modeling. Students also have access to instruments and computers used for volcano monitoring through the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV). Such instruments include Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, total field station and EDM instruments, precise leveling instruments, portable seismometers and gas geochemical instruments."

Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV): The Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) is a training and outreach program established by the Hawai'i State Legislature in 1989. Located in the UH Hilo Geology Building, CSAV's mission is to provide training and information on volcanic and natural hazards that occur in Hawai'i and worldwide. This is done through a variety of programs: public outreach, including visits to schools and the presentation of public lectures and symposia; a summer program training scientists from developing nations in techniques in volcanic hazards monitoring and response; a summer program training university students in volcanological field methods; a summer program training educators in volcanology; several research projects; and the production of public informational programs on natural hazards preparedness and response for Hawai'i residents."
