Geology of Interactions of Volcanoes, Snow, and Water

SUMMARY

Volcanoes in the Cascade Range and Alaska are snow covered at least part of the year. Most of the northern ones harbor permanent snowfields and glaciers. All of them have an internal groundwater system; a few of them are surrounded by seawater. During eruption volcanoes interact with this water, snow, and ice in many ways, complicating eruptions and generally increasing hazards to people and property.
