CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, January 30, 2009 08:53 PST (Friday, January 30, 2009 16:53 UTC)
Cascade Range Volcanoes
Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake volcano, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California. Mount St. Helens has been at Volcano Alert Level NORMAL (Aviation Color Code GREEN) since July 10, 2008.
Recent Observations: Volcano seismicity has remained at background levels throughout the week. All seismometers in the region did, however, register a magnitude 4.5 earthquake at 5:25 AM PST today. This non-volcanic earthquake occurred near Indianola, Washington in the Puget Sound region, and had a hypocentral depth of 58 km.

Recent Observations: Seismicity has remained at background levels throughout the week. Owing to wind conditions and relatively clear skies at Mount St. Helens, occasional small plumes of steam and/or dust have been reported this week.

Recent Observations: Seismicity is at background levels, though several small earthquakes have been recorded at Mount St. Helens this week. With the return of good weather to the Cascades, field crews were deployed to Mount St. Helens on Thursday, 15 January. They inspected seismic field installations, made repairs to radio repeaters, acoustic flow meters, and remotely-operated cameras.
