CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, August 6, 2010 8:57 AM PDT (Friday, August 6, 2010 15:57 UTC)
CASCADE RANGE VOLCANOES
Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake volcano, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.
Recent Observations: Activity at Cascade Range volcanoes remained at background levels this week.

Recent Observations: Several small earthquakes (up to M1.7) occurred this week beneath the lower west flank of Mount Hood near the same area that has been active throughout the summer. Such swarms are common at Mount Hood and do not represent a change in volcanic activity.

Recent Observations: CVO scientists conducted a variety of field site maintenance and field investigations this week, including: seismic site maintenance; photogrammetry work; campaign gps data collection at Mt. Hood; gravity surveys at Mt. Hood and Mount St. Helens; channel cross section surveys; and tiltmeter installation work.

Recent Observations: An international group of geoscientists has been working in the Mount St. Helens crater this week. In coordination with CVO scientists, they are conducting follow-up studies of the recent lava dome. Elsewhere, CVO field crews tended to improving the network of seismic and deformation monitors near Crater Lake. |
