January 2010

CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Saturday, January 2, 2010 11:11 PST (Saturday, January 2, 2010 19:11 UTC)

Cascade Range Volcanoes
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake volcano, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California. Mount St. Helens has been at Volcano Alert Level NORMAL (Aviation Color Code GREEN) since July 10, 2008.

Recent Observations: The seismicity for the Cascade Range volcanoes is at background levels. There are no significant new observations to report.

CASCADE RANGE VOLCANOES
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Recent Observations: At 07:30 PST on Wednesday 27 January 2010, there was a small earthquake swarm at Mount Rainier. This seismic microburst lasted for about ten minutes. The largest earthquake in the sequence was magnitude 1.4. Individual earthquakes were located beneath the summit of the volcano and are typical of those in similar small swarms that have occurred in the past at Mount Rainier. Otherwise, Cascade Range volcano seismicity and deformation have remained at background levels during the past week. No field work was scheduled this week.
