Cascade Range Current Updates
September 2010

CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, September 3, 2010 8:50 AM PDT (Friday, September 3, 2010 15:50 UTC)

CASCADE RANGE VOLCANOES
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake volcano, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.

Recent Observations: Seismicity has been at normal, background levels in the Cascades this past week, although this morning a brief flurry of small earthquakes occurred at Mount Hood. Such seismic activity at Mount Hood occurs commonly and is not extraordinary or unusual. Field crews flew around Mount Hood and Mount Adams yesterday making measurements of background fluxes of volcanic gases, and today field crews are at Mount St. Helens conducting routine instrumentation maintenance and doing scientific field investigations.

Recent Observations: It has been a quiet week in the Cascades. Seismicity remained at normal background levels at each of the volcanoes. No unusual ground deformation or activity of any kind was noted. Marginal weather throughout the week precluded most field work. GPS observations were made at two sites on Mount Hood as part of routine monitoring there.

Recent Observations: No significant changes in activity occurred during the past week. A magnitude 1.4 earthquake was detected at Mount Hood. Scientists worked at Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Three Sisters mapping and conducting routine maintenance on GPS and seismometers.

Cascade Range Volcanoes
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake volcano, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.

Recent Observations: Several earthquakes occurred at Mount Rainier this week with magnitudes as high as 1.5. At Mount St. Helens, five earthquakes occurred with magnitudes up to 1.7. Such earthquakes are commonly observed during background time periods at both volcanoes. Field work at Mount St. Helens this week included: repair of GPS monitoring sites, installation of an additional pressure sensor at the Spirit Lake outlet tunnel, establishing ground control points for an upcoming aerial survey, and geologic investigations of new exposures of 1980 deposits on the Pumice Plain.
