Image, click to enlarge

View looking west-southwest across Mount St. Helens' crater from the Brutus camera on the east rim at 09:14 a.m. PDT, about 6 minutes after the M3.1 event and associated rockfall. Letters correspond to (A) the 1980-86 lava dome, (B) the older part (2004-2005) of new lava dome, (C) the currently extruding lava spine, and (D) the east arm of the glacier.

Picture 1: View from the Brutus camera at 09:14 a.m. PDT, about 6 minutes after this morning’s event. Vapor with light ash obscures most of the extruding lava spine. The light gray swath in the center of the photograph shows the path of the rock avalanche as it flowed downhill. The dark areas adjacent to the rock-avalanche path shows the ash cloud (finer material) that accompanied the avalanche.

Picture 2: View from Brutus camera at 10:14 a.m. PDT, about 1 hour after this morning’s event. This image and the closeup-view below, when compared to the image of 18 May below, shows substantial decrepitation of the new lava spine. Because of the poor weather of the past week, it is unclear whether all of this change occurred this morning. It is likely that small failures may have been associated with some of the larger earthquake events of the past week, but probably the greatest amount of change occurred this morning.
