1992 Washington State Hydrologic Summary

Total precipitation during the 1992 water year was about 91 percent of normal in western Washington and about 88 percent of normal in eastern Washington. The total precipitation for the water year ranged between about 80 and 110 percent of normal throughout the State. Precipitation during May was the farthest below normal for a month when the monthly total was about 30 percent of normal in western Washington and about 20 percent of normal in eastern Washington. Monthly precipitation was the farthest above normal during April in western Washington, and during July in eastern Washington, when monthly totals were about 160 and 360 percent of normal, respectively.

Rainfall in western Washington was less than 75 percent of normal during the months of October, December, March, May, and August. It was near normal during January, February, June, and September, and was more than 125 percent of normal during November, April, and July.

In eastern Washington, precipitation was less than 75 percent of normal during the months of October, December, January, March, May, and August. It was near normal during February and September, and was more than 125 percent of normal during November, April, June, and July.

The annual mean runoff was far below normal throughout Washington during the 1992 water year.

During the 1992 water year, no significant flood events occurred in Washington. In western Washington some minor flooding occurred on coastal rivers during January 28 to 31. Peak flows during other events in both western and eastern Washington had recurrence intervals of 3 years or less. (A peak flow that has a recurrence interval of five years can be expected to be exceeded once in five years on the average.)
