1993 Washington State Hydrologic Summary

Total precipitation during the 1993 water year was about 81 percent of normal in western Washington and about 96 percent of normal in eastern Washington. The total precipitation for the water year ranged between about 70 and 130 percent of normal throughout the State. Precipitation during February was the farthest below normal for a month when the monthly total was about 6 percent of normal in western Washington and about 23 percent of normal in eastern Washington. Monthly precipitation was the farthest above normal during June in western Washington, and during July in eastern Washington, when monthly totals were about 170 and 360 percent of normal, respectively.

Rainfall in western Washington was less than 75 percent of normal during the months of October, December, January, February, August, and September. It was near normal during November and March, and was more than 140 percent of normal during April, May, June, and July.

In eastern Washington, precipitation was less than 75 percent of normal during the months of October, January, and September. It was near normal during November, December, March, and August, and was more than 125 percent of normal during April, May, June, and July.

The annual mean runoff was below normal throughout Washington during the 1993 water year.

During the 1993 water year, no significant flood events occurred in Washington. In western Washington some minor flooding occurred in the Snohomish River basin on January 25. Peak flows in both western and eastern Washington had recurrence intervals of 2 years of less. (A peak flow that has a recurrence interval of five years can be expected to be exceeded once in five years on the average.
